Find the right game
This guide is about actually finding battles: the platform, rules, set length, sheet format, timing and matchup goal another player needs before accepting.
Match the battle to the practice goal
“Pokémon battle” can mean a casual game, Ranked doubles, a closed-sheet best-of-one, a tournament-style best-of-three or a deliberate test of one difficult matchup. A Discord request works when it removes that ambiguity. State the game or simulator, regulation, connection method, set length, team-sheet rules and the time you can start.
Casual battle
Agree on level, allowed Pokémon and any house rules before connecting.
Ranked practice
Use the live Ranked rules and explain whether you are testing a new team or preparing to climb.
BO1 testing
Fast games expose common leads and immediate weaknesses, but provide less adaptation data.
BO3 set
Play the full set. Review the information revealed in game one and the adjustments made afterward.
Open Team Sheets
Agree on exactly which team information is shared and keep the same legal team through the set.
Targeted matchup
Name the archetype or core you need to test so the opponent can bring an appropriate team.
BO1, BO3 and OTS are not interchangeable

Write a clear battle request
Do not publish private connection codes more widely than necessary. Move platform-specific details into the relevant server channel once an opponent responds. Be clear about disconnect procedures before a serious set starts.
Use targeted practice without rigging the result
If rain, Trick Room or a specific restricted core is a repeat problem, request that matchup. Keep the opponent’s build realistic, play both common and alternative leads, and do not reset every time the opening is unfavourable. The goal is to learn recovery lines as well as ideal ones.

Review the battle, not only the result
- Save the replay or note the critical turns.
- Record the lead, selected four and expected win condition.
- Mark revealed information and speed order.
- Find the first decision that made later turns difficult.
- Retest the same question before rebuilding.

Find the right practice partner
State the format, platform, sheet rules, time zone and exact question. Clear requests are easier to answer and easier to review.
